George Fernandes – The Deserted Hero!

Print this article
By Donald D'Silva, Mumbai [ Published Date: July 12, 2010 ]

A great socialist politician, reformer, a dynamic union leader, Social crusader! A great personality, who can single handedly tilt the opinion of the crowd towards the point he made in a gathering. Also well known for his crowed pulling antics, a powerful orator, a brilliant personality, a man who fought for the average taxi drivers, auto rickshaw guys, mill workers, poor people who were having a meager income and the ever dreaming hand to mouth society!

Today, the charm is gone. Of course, old age catches up with every living being. But, just as a distinguished personality is over the hill, he is into old age problems, unknown troubles of his own; this does not give anyone the right to interfere in his life and its sad offerings! He had close people, relatives who abandoned him when the common issues of daily life did not match with each other’s views or could be the state of political affairs, issues he was involved in. The biggest pointer here is towards his estranged wife, Mrs. Laila Kabeer, who allegedly left him when it suited her the most and has made a comeback when again at a time suitable to her. She has allegedly taken him as a prisoner confined to his own house. What is the difference between a common citizen of India and has been a great political leader, a strong & powerful union kingpin! Who is responsible for his helplessness?

It is well understood, any diseases do not come knocking on the door with an invite or RSVP, but, there are close people, relatives, further more spouses, children who look after them, care for them, attend to them, pour affection, indulge in their daily dos and don’ts. If I can take the liberty of mentioning our great ex Prime Minister, Mr. A B Vajpayee, He stayed a bachelor .Gave Indian politics his full time attention, led from the front, consolidated BJP’s control over the masses. Reigned supreme till UPA returned to power in 2004.

He must have thought out well in advance the nuances of not having a family. He adopted a child, a baby girl as his daughter .Today he is contented with his daughter, son-in-law, grand son and enjoying a peaceful family life and ready to accept the almighty’s invitation to join him in heaven if he desires so!

But, our great Mangalorean firebrand leader is surrounded by unwanted controversies and is totally confined to house arrest by his loved ones and the media is silent as if it’s nobody’s business! How can we Mangaloreans tolerate this? Where are the NDA leaders? Why a great leader like Mr. L K Advani is not interested in his ex cabinet minister’s welfare, peace and future? He is the person who is interested and likes the normal daily routine of the average Indian commoner. Watch cricket, watch some quality movies, and appreciate them. Also using his clout and power he often in the past has successfully shared screen space with the biggies of Hollywood and Cricket, have floated his opinions, made his points reflect across, in other words has always been vocal about  these subjects and seen that his opinions register with the listeners, his audience. Be it a Musharraf, or a Ram Gopal verma!

Such a great personality is not bothered to come to the rescue of his socialist friend! The Nation definitely will be surprised! Advaniji is the first person you can count to be there for all your troubles, if you are his friend .The masses did not elect him as PM, NDA lost the election all this is acceptable to his avid followers. Nobody bats an eyelid on that! The surprise package is Mr. Fernandes being ignored like he never existed for NDA or Indian Politics! Some one really help me, this is a puzzle which cannot be solved by anyone!

The honorable high court has ruled that he should be with his wife and his brothers can visit him. Again, this issue could have been solved by the top leaders coming together and solving this problem. The sole reason being, Mr. Fernandes is an Alzheimer’s patient. He has no clue what’s happening around him. His brothers have declared that they are not interested in his money. It has been reportedly said that a house and other property valued at some thirteen crores is at stake. Even his onetime disciple Mr. Sharad Rao who is now the union leader for Taxis and Auto rickshaws in Mumbai has deserted him it seems. Or is there a communication gap? The same dis-engagement was reportedly done by Congress Party to Ex. Prime Minister, Late Mr. Narasimha Rao .They were steering clear from the Babri Masjid controversy. However, his close family members and his close confidante Maninderjit Singh Bitta were by his side. He died a peaceful death.

NDA leaders, Samata party leaders & party members, people from Muzaffarnagar constituency in Bihar, his old time friends in Congress and his friends like Shive sena Chief Balasaheb Thackrey, Sharad Pawar  etc should spare time and involve in finding an amicable solution to this very sad issue. The subject is subjudice, but again the victim is suffering and is not in the know of what’s happening around him. Will someone step in and solve the issue peacefully!

@Richard Moraes,
Just because he is the defence minister should he not have spoken against the violence. later in when the Khandamal riots took place he was no one, yet i don't remember he ever raising his voice against the violence.

The Konkan Railway would have come anyways since it was the need of the hour and it was long overdue. Yes i do agree that he removed the hurdles on the files pending for so long.

As the defence minister have we forgotten the Coffin case.

One thing though that i feel sad about is there is no one like him to unite the opposition.
kavi bhandary, UAE:

pls can u get in touch

RICHARD MORAS, India :
I THINK SOME PEOPLE ARE IGNORANT AS TO THE ACHIEVEMENTS OF GF. HE IS THE ARCHITECT OF KONKAN RAILWAY, BEST DEFENCE MINISTER & ALWAYS CARED FOR THE WORKING CLASS & DOWNTRODDEN.

HE WAS NOT THE HOME MINISTER OF INDIA TO PURSUE THE ISSUES LIKE KILLING OF GRAHAM STAINES OR KHANDAMAL ATTAKS. HE WAS THE DEFENCE MINISTER OF INDIA.
Anand Dsilva, UAE:
There are 2 types of people in this world. One who work hard to reach to the top level without knowing what will happen next and other who inherit primarily because of their family connections. This applies to most fields whether it be business, cinema or politics.

George began as a revolutionary like several other leaders during emergency who today are big names leading regional parties and went on to become the Defence Minister of India. It is not a mean achievement and we Mangaloreans need to be proud of the fact that a person born & raised in Mangalore rose to this heights.

Like any of us, George's personality and views are what he underwent during his lifetime and circumstances he faced. Kicking out IBM & Coca Cola was primarily to protect national interests.

Personally I feel he lived a very simple life. Just wearing a ordinary kurtha and substantially reducing his personal security while he was the defence minister.

There is nothing much anybody can do. He is currently being taken care of his wife and nobody can poke their nose into private life of anybody. His colleagues whether Vajpayee or Thackeray have equally become old too.
Anil Dsouza, Qatar:
I am yet to understand what is GF's contribution to Indian politics. he was a good union leader do doubt about it compared to another who answered to the name of Datta Samant a person responsible for the economic rundown of Bombay.

GF with his anti US and foreign goods views threw the country back by about 50 years. Are we prasing him only because he is a Christian and a Mangalorean then save it for he did nothing for the good of both.

As a defence minister he was involved in controversies. the one thing that he did though was unite the NDA he was the trouble shooter for them and for Vajpayee.

His silence during the killing of Graham Steins said it all whose side he was on. Neither was there any response from him during the attacks in Orissa on Christmas day or during the Khandamal attacks.

With regard to his personal life we are no one to say whom he should have been with or not.
Sushil Kumar, Mangalore, India :
George's biggest contribution has been in uniting the opposition forces under the banner of NDA and facilitating BJP to take the lead and rule India for 5 years. Today not a single BJP leader or a worker is ready to even enquire about his health let alone sympathise.

He has been a congress basher from Indira Gandhi's time simply because he was arrested during emergency for his anti social activities such as conspiring to blow up the raliways in 70's. And who can forget the famous strike by LIC against computerisation which pushed India back by at least 50 years until Rajiv Ghandi opened the sector with top priority.

During Janata Dal rule soon after emergency he ensured both IBM and Coca Cola were kicked out from India thus giving the signal to the world that MNC's are not welcome in India.

Today if India is emerging as a great nation it is because of the selfless policies of Ghandhis and not socialist/communist and communal leaders India has seen.
L.V. Barboza - Shirva, UK:
It is apparent that, professional life somewhat linked to the personal life, but in my opinion it is wide of the mark to combine these to and come to a conclusion. As said in the article George Fernades (GF) is a great political leader. Careful study of political leaders from Mangalore and Udupi district clearly indicate that GF ideology and operating style is different compare to our conventional way adapted by many of Mangalore Udupi Political leaders. This may be a one the reason for his political success. With out doubt GF is brave and dynamic leader, though he has not got enough support from in native, he has done many great things for our mother land. We can only wish that rest of his life be happy and peaceful.

Please don’t be so pathetic, Sheikh, Udupi, Saudi Arabia in jumping into conclusion. Almighty never Curse any one.

Good one Mr. Donald D’Silva - Mumbai
Om Shetty, India :
He is one of our great politicians. The rest are all mostly corrupt, dirty, venal, and repulsive like Lallo. As defence minister he did great things for the Army - a socialist who gave them honor. All these allegations of curruption are about people around him and not about him personally. And they are being made by people who dislike what he did for India and for being firm and strong. They are the real enemies of the country.
Kuldeep Kamath, India :
If there was a genuine concern between George and his brothers they should have made him to sign a medical power of attorney document in time. Also a Will with regard to his property would have come of great help at this moment of crisis. There are many Georges out there in Mangalore and all over the world contributing much to the society but fail in making basic necessary decision regarding their own health and property. Then the kin and kith fight tooth and nail for small piece of cake lacking the attitude of give and take. Become bitter and never see eye to eye. May be the case of George is an eye opener to many good grown up Mangaloreans to settle matters of the family while they are still functioning. There is no shame in it but needs decisive courage to appoint a power of attorney of health and to register a property.
RONEY VEIGAS, India :
I salute to Mr. George Fernandes for good work he has done in his tenure, because of him today we ARE enjoying konkan railway facility.
GOD BLESS HIM
Sunil Shetty, UAE:
A True Son of Mother Land...he is one of the most respected Defence Ministers India has ever had... we won the Kargil War during his tenure... gave us the Konkan Rail..... now he is fighting a battle to bring his personal life into track.. let the Almighty give him the Strength & Support... We Mangaloreans are proud of you George..
sathish kotian, India :
Hero for ever .....great man George Fernandes, i prayed god to make him win in his last election ...but it didnt happen...but now i pray god to improve his health and come out of this issue peacefully..
Royan, Iceland :
Do u guys know why George commented on Sonia, its jusr because he was against gandhi family.

In the time during the emergency (1975-1977) Indira wanted all the socialist people to either surender or to be jailed and when George was not jailed she had personally odered the authorities to arrest George's Mother and Brother Lawrence.

Mother was made to drink the urine of the constables and Lawrence was beaten black and blue just to tell where George is and sadly they too didnt know where he was |George, Lawrence remainde a bachelor till his death untill a few years ago but guys he was paralaysed for 1977 onwards untill his death after the Indira ordeal.

One thing I would say that George was a born fighter, in 1977 when he first became a minister in the central Govt. he was the one who introduced the small scale industry system and when he came to be a minister for the second time in 1989 he was the one who made the Konkan railway a reality (do you know Knokan Railway project was drafted by the Btitishers in teh year 1890's and they had then projected the it will be a profit of 5Lacks during their time, but could not execute the project due to unrest for the independence in India) and not only that he made the Konkan Railway Corp. as a seperate entity beacause the subsicuvent Govt. may scrap the project, and it happened as the successor to George was Jaffer Sheriff as the railway minister and our own Kannadiga tried day and night to scrap the project but just because George had set up the Copr. he could not do anything and Konkan Railway is a reality now.
Mario, India :
When Mr Staines and his children, had died, our hero George was a minister then. What respect did he have towards those who were burnt alive. Surely, we expected a lot from Georgie. But, alas How could our ever so selfish Georgie change?
roy patrao, India :
MANY INTER - CASTE MARRIAGES HAVE SIMILAR INCIDENTS. AFTER SOME YEARS OF MARRIAGE IT TAKES TO DIFFERENT DIRECTIONS DUE TO DIFFERENT KIND OF CULTURE / UPBRINGING.-UNCOMFORTABLE / STAYING WITHOUT ADJUSTMENTS/ FINALLY DIVORCE.(LOOSING RESPECT FROM COMMUNITY.)
Das, India :
Dear Author,

It is commendable what this man has done for his country on the whole. He has surely done his best and same must be complimented. However having mentioned same one cannot forget that he was associated with a communal party who only preach that they are working for all Indians, but in reality they are involved in Hindu vote bank politics. so lets not condemn one party just bcoz their leader by birth is a non hindu and give other people clean chits. We have seen both parties are involved in communal vote bank politics and violence. Both are same, only with the exception that the present govt. has helped India grow commercially. If Mr. George could have stood independent of any party affiliations I am sure he would have been more popular and come close to being a more stronger national leader. Lets introspect, he was with NDA nad fought like a soldier, but what has happened today no one from this NDA is with him. Lets forget support, they dont even want to be with him to console him.

Sad but this man alligned with wrong people, else he would surely be a strong Leader.

I pray God help him find peace.
RICHARD MORAS, India :
MR. SHEIKH,

YOU ARE UNFIT EVEN TO COMMENT ON GEORGE FERNANDES. WHO ARE YOU TO CURSE A INTERNATIONAL LEADER LIKE GEORGE? IF YOU ARE SYCHOPHANT OF SONIA GANDHI, DO NOT SHOW IT TO CRITICIZE OTHERS.
Satish Rao M,Pune, India :
A great politician, crusader against injustice, leader of mass, above all "Father of Konkan Railway" Mangalorean will never ever forget his contribution to the welfare of this Nation. Jai ho George, the giant killer as he was popularly known in Mumbai
CDS, India :
"THE GREAT KONKAN RAILWAYS HERO". THOSE WHO TRAVEL THROUGH KONKAN RAILWAYS ALWAYS REMEMBER HIM. IN THIS REGARD, HIS NAME WILL REMAIN IMMORTAL. HE WAS THE FIRST DEFENCE MINISTER WHO VISITED SIACHIN GLACIER & UNDERSTOOD OUR SOLDIERS PROBLEMS & PROVIDED THEM WHATEVER THEY NEED. IT WOULD BE GREAT ACHIEVEMENT IF PRESENT POLITICIANS DO 10% OF WHAT GEORGE FERNANDES HAS DONE.

I FULLY ENDORSE 'VIKRAM-QATAR COMMENTS'
Donald D' Silva, India :
Dear Austin,

You are right. Mr.Fernandes should have divorced and cut off ties with Laila Kabeer. At this jucture no one can do any justice on this front.

William, we are sad that a firebrand Mangalorean who used to frighten the daylights out of the BEST, Railways and Port, Mill managements is today in a very bad situation.

Sheikh,
GF was never communal. He fought elections from Bihar's Muzaffarnagar. He was against Mrs. Indira Gandhi's policies. He hated Nehruvian dynastical politics. He was a great orater. But never supported communal divide. Instead He was a great China basher. He hated communists!!
We can't ignore such a great son of Mangalore!
